Islas Ballestas - 12th October 2007

An early morning wake up of 6.30 had us on our way to Islas Ballestas, otherwise known as the poor mans Galapagos, I thought I´d make a visit just in case the money runs out before I get to the real Galapagos!

It was a great trip that involved an hours boat trip out and then an hours or so around a group of islands where we saw endangered Humboldt penguins, Peruvian bobbies, guanay cormorants in addition to two bottlenose dolphins.

On our return to the hostal Sylvia, the owner, informed us that soon after we left there had been a small earthquake, which had got everyone nervous again, and its not surprising really when you see what the last one did!

We decided to head straight off when we got back to the hostal, me to Nasca and Noam to Ica although he was trying to get me to change my plans and join him in Ica for sand boarding, fortunately his desire to go to Ica was greater than his desire to join me!

I thought I might have a peaceful journey down to Nazca alone but it turned out we shared the bus to Ica where I then changed for Nasca, well it was nice for the company!

The bus journey in total took 4 and half hours and cost just $4, I don´t think I can get to Tescos for that price let alone anywhere further! Aha public transport huh?!

The hostal I chose in Nasca was the Barbant hostal run by a nice Dutch Peruvian couple, Hietta is Dutch 5'7" with a baby on the way and her husband Abdon is 4' nothing if that! A very nice couple who were able to help me out with all the things I was intending to do on my short visit there! Unfortunately though the beds were like boards or worse and even flexed when you lay on them, but hey its only for the one night!

They even helped me out by booking my onward travel, I´m taking the night bus from Nasca to Arequipa, around 9 hours or so! There was only two seats left when Hietta called the bus company, both on the top floor at the very front, it sounded good to me until she told me that no one ever wants those seats in case the bus crashes! Mmm!

In the mean time and top of the list for Nasca activities is a flight over the Nasca lines (of course) in addition to which I´m planning a trip to the Chauchilla cemetary and a visit to the Maria Reiche planetarium.

Straight after a bite to eat I headed off to the planetarium to find it wasn´t the top of everyone elses list of activities in Nasca as there were only two other people there and no guide to start with, even he wasn´t expecting any visitors! It was a good show though and he pointed out various constellations as well as Jupiter with two of its moons that we could see.

One of the others who was also into star gazing mentioned that she had been sandboarding that day down the highest dune in the world, Cerro Blanco (2078m). Now that was never part of my plan, as to be honest I´m not a huge fan of sand (!) but there I was seriously thinking it was a great idea!

On closer information gathering (by dad) it seems that there are in fact several "highest sand dunes in the world" but hey I managed to convince myself it was gonna be a great idea! We will see!

In the meantime its an early night for my flight over the Nasca lines.

Pisco - 11th October 2007

So following the earthquake of 15th August near Pisco, Pedro and Christian the joint owners of Family Backpackers where I´ve been staying in Lima advised me against going there but apart from my personal interest in seeing the area I´ve been checking the info on the internet and there is at least one hostal still standing and open and I´m sure they´re not having too many visitors so I´m gonna give it a go!

The bus I decided to get from Lima to Pisco was a local one so as I had aleady bought a Pacsafe webbing for my rucksac I thought better safe than sorry and I´d use it, unfortunately I had left the instructions at home!! And with 5 mins till I had to leave for the bus, time was running out! Anyhow after a fashion I managed to figure it out, kinda!

On arrival at the bus terminal it turns out that my travelling companion is a nice but way too talkaltive Israely guy, Noam, (Kim - unfortunately nothing like the Israely guy I was sitting with on my last return from California!). And after spending 5 mins talking at me decided that he was gonna change his plans and join me in Pisco!
The bus journey from Lima to Pisco took 3 hours and my traveling companion managed to talk for at least 2 hours and 55 mins of that journey!

Pisco has been pretty much completely devastated by the earthquake but amazingly the San Isidro hostal is still standing, not too sure how to be honest, but it is and they were really pleased to see us!

This is not the San Isidro hostal but another less fortunate building!

We then headed off into town and the market area to take a look around, and I´m sure Naom managed to annoy one or two people with his constant picture taking and general annoyingness but we´ve managed to live to tell the tale!

This is a fabulous fruit and veg stand in Pisco.

Huaca Pucllana (my first Inca temple) - 10th October 2007

It was my first day in South America so I decided to start as I meant to continue and headed off to find Huaca Pucllana, an Inca ruin not far from where I was staying. Well after about an hour of walking who knows where I came across a securidad guard who thankfully pointed me in the right direction! And I´m glad he did as it was a very interesting site and our guide was very knowlegable explaining everything in perfect English! I will get a chance to practise my Spanish soon, I´m sure!

So after my brief brush with culture I headed off into town with only a sketchy map to guide the way, to see what that part of town had to offer!
It wasn´t quite what I was expecting to be honest as it´s not too dissimilar to some other major cities that caters for tourists with Pizza Hut, McDonalds, TGI Friday and Burger King etc on several street corners!

I came across an open top bus tour and decided on jumping aboard to get the highlights of the area before I moved on the next day, although it turned out I had aleady seen the major sights! Hey, it was a nice bus journey!
I wandered back to the hostel along the beach just as it was getting dark, mentally planning my onward travel.

Next stop Pisco, the location of the magnitude 8 earthquake on 15th August this year.

I´ve arrived! - 10th October 2007

Yay!! I´ve arrived!! After just 24 hours travelling as well! :)

Renaldo picked me up from the airport without any problems at all, and after spending the last half hour of the flight practising my greeting to him and introduction he goes and welcomes me in perfect English with a strong American accent!

The hostel I´m staing in is very friendly and clean although last night there was just a small problem of the door not actually closing!! Soon sorted that though and this morning I was moved to another room which was better as the door even locks!

I´m now heading off into down town Miraflores and all that has to offer, one of the owners has just been giving me the low down on places to visit he has advised me to head off to a location where they sell nice but expensive 'handicraps', worth checking out I´m thinking! :)
Then I´m gonna head off to my very first Inca temple!

Still packing!

I'm still packing - whilst realising that a 65 litre rucksac isn't that big after all, although when you pack it like I do it feels like a 165 litre rucksac!
Dad is picking me up in just 5 hours time, at 4 am, to go to the airport and at this rate I wont even have finished getting sorted let alone sleep before I go!
Oh well I guess with an 18 hour trip to Peru I should be ok!

Packing!

It's 3 .15am the day before I'm due to leave for 6 weeks in Peru and Ecuador and I'm still not packed and ready to go! I have a pile of gear so huge, it looks like the Andes and there's really no way it's all gonna go in 1 backpac, somehow I don't think I've ever mastered the art of packing light! :-)

To Machu Picchu in Silk Underwear

Ok, THERMAL silk underwear if I'm gonna be honest.......
Hey, its cold up there........!!
